CynergisTek CEO to Speak Alongside Fellow Industry Experts at NCHICA AMC Privacy and Security Conference 2012

Mac McMillan, Adam Greene of Davis Wright Tremaine and Ross Janssen from the University of Minnesota to Discuss “Managing Medical Research, Residents and Security & Privacy Issues”

Austin, TX, April 17, 2012 — CynergisTek, an authority in enterprise security solutions and services for healthcare organizations, today announced that its CEO, Mac McMillan, will be presenting a case study on “Managing Medical Research, Residents and Security & Privacy Issues” with Adam Greene, Esq. of Davis Wright Tremaine, and Ross Janssen, JD, CIPP, CIPP/IT, Director of the Privacy and Security Office at the University of Minnesota at the Eighth Annual Academic Medical Center (AMC) Privacy and Security Conference. The AMC Conference, “Changing Risks and Requirements: The New World of Healthcare Security and Privacy,” will take place from April 23-25, 2012 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and is presented by the North Carolina Healthcare Information and Communications Alliance (NCHICA).

In the session, the security experts will utilize a case study format to explore privacy and security risk management aspects of medical research, including legal implications and best practices. Janssen will describe how the University of Minnesota engaged in research and structured itself for security and privacy compliance, and Greene will detail unique requirements associated with research, including the establishment of appropriate boundaries between research and other AMC components. Finally, McMillan will explain how these requirements form the basis for an overall risk management plan.

“In the academic medical setting, large amounts of data are often required for conducting research, and this can amount to significant risk for the institution handling the sensitive healthcare data, especially in terms of HIPAA,” said McMillan. “With information now more readily available at our fingertips than ever, we are indeed in a new world of healthcare security and privacy, and these issues need to be addressed and discussed with our peers. At the AMC event, I look forward to collaborating with Greene and Janssen to explore these vulnerabilities unique to the academic setting and provide a best practices approach for handling data to ensure that our academic institutions are fully HIPAA- compliant.”
